The Moon's a Balloon is the first, and very good. It's thirty years old or more now, I bet, I wonder if it's still in print?

I read that anecdote WFB wrote about his friend David Niven being unable to speak to a passing acqaintance due to ALS, sitting at the stoplight. He was really funny, right to the end.SippicanCottagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14940797380578921776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14474631.post-1152274638164081022006-07-07T08:17:00.000-04:002006-07-07T08:17:00.000-04:00Damn, Grant could be funny. Effortless, fun to watch, believable. Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, etc. etc. Helluva track record.

At local playhouses there are a few actors who, when the play starts, I know it's going to be good no matter what. They've got a small part of what fueled Grant: you trust him; you can relax and have fun because you know you're in good hands.

More often now, suspension of disbelief is a viewer's task, left unaided by the cast. Worst case scenario: the ironically detached actor; "I'm in a movie, get it?", not telling a story.

Re: David Niven
Is his "The Moon's a Balloon" worth seeking out? I've never read it, but heard of it (oddly enough, referenced by Wm F Buckley).KCFleminghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00124201866124646626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14474631.post-1152227236846498842006-07-06T19:07:00.000-04:002006-07-06T19:07:00.000-04:00Claus- thanks for commenting.Cary Grant strikes me...Claus- thanks for commenting.

Cary Grant strikes me as one of the few truly self-invented persons of note I can name. Ernest Hemingway and Mark Twain also come to mind. He literally decidedwhat he was, and then offered it to the world.

He's also one of the few actors to get out on top, and live comfortably and with his essential dignity right to the end of his life. It's like they turned the cameras off, and he just kept going, being Cary Grant.

We watch "To Catch a Thief" over and over. It captures that era, and those people, and that area and time, masterfully.

What an interesting man David Niven was. I've read many stories about his bon vivant life in Europe. You're lucky to have been included in the festivities.SippicanCottagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14940797380578921776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14474631.post-1152203594654613272006-07-06T12:33:00.000-04:002006-07-06T12:33:00.000-04:00I had the pleasure of meeting Cary Grant in Monaco...I had the pleasure of meeting Cary Grant in Monaco in the midsixties.
Being very young I did´nt know much about his superstar status.
He was - as was my parents - visisting Davis Niven.
These days - with both my parents gone - I am still looking for photographs from this holiday.
My Dad - an architect - left thousands of photoes of villaes and swimmingpools. Most of them without a single human face on.
I enjoyed reading your site
Claus von Trierchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04143583839488951699noreply@blogger.com
