Mrs. Mamet Captures The Essence Of The Thing

Show, don't tell. Dem's the rules. Alone in the big city, with a happy, somewhat wistful hope to be together soon. The song will do the work for you if you let it.

Always hated the Beach Men. I was forced to play "Surfin' USA" about eleventy hundred times. No matter.

Ther seems to be a surfeit of pleasant young ladies strumming and singing nowadays, a bit cloying but better than most contemporary audio abominations.

Recently, I forget where, the etymology of nice was brought to my attention. It's gone through a great many permutations over the centuries. On the one hand, nice actually means "stupid.

Seems to me this song brings it back around to its original meaning, which in a way could be construed as innocent; only here, the innocence called to mind is not necessarily that of the newborn, but of the eternal.

Wouldn't it be nice if we were Older...

Yes. Yes, it would.

Julie, Ann Barnhardt did the definitive piece on the etymology of nice. barnhardt.biz

That's nice.

Actually, her phrasing is annoying. But that's because I have heard the original, sung by the writer. That boy could sing.

I introduced my youngest son to this yesterday:

Interestingly, I too found myself faced with a playlist of about 600 songs during the early '90's. Hard to keep the show fresh when you're playing Golden Oldies. Over. And. Over. Again.

I once read somewhere that it was difficult to translate "Beach Boys" into Russian, so they were called "The Boys Who Spend Time at the Seashore."

G Bob- Awesomeness. Scared to ask what "Men Who Stare At Goats" might mean in Cyrillic, though.

Same as here -- "Muslim."

Or did you mean in a non-sexual way?

Just KIDDING! We love our Muslim friends.
